UK Banks Are on the Hunt for Tech Wizards
According to a fresh report by fintech specialist Fraedom, over half of UK banks (58%) are actively looking to boost their in‑house tech talent.
They’re doing this by hiring fresh faces, 48% of them seeking external gigs or bringing in partners to plug skill gaps.
When it comes to future hires, three roles are front and centre:
- Technology Risk Analysts – 32% of banks say they’re after these folks.
- Data Scientists – 30% are on the list.
- Network Specialists – 24% want to strengthen their network squads.
Why Partner with FinTechs?
Russell Bennett, CEO of Fraedom points out that many banks admit they lack in‑house tech know‑how.
“There’s a huge opportunity for banks to team up with fintechs and uncover exactly what tech chops they need. Whether that means hiring fresh talent or upskilling current staff, partnerships can fill those gaps—especially since 34% of banks feel they don’t have the right expertise on their own. Fintechs can help banks figure out what tech to adopt and also attract top talent, especially as younger professionals are looking for the latest gadgets and platforms,” he says.
Training is the New Recruitment
Over the past five years, 60% of banks have beefed up internal training programmes, and 36% have launched fresh external training initiatives.
Looking ahead, nearly a third of banks (28%) are rolling out new internal training, while 20% plan to send staff to outside programmes.
It’s About Culture, Not Just Talent
“Banks aren’t just pulling in new people; they’re bringing the existing crew up to speed so they can keep pace with technology. Partnering with fintechs means banks can tap into talents that already live within their organisations. To squeeze the most out of these efforts, banks need a culture that gives people the freedom and flexibility they crave—especially for those in tech and development roles.”
“And let’s face it—the competition for top talent is fierce. Creating a unique culture is the best way to stand out.”
So if you’re a career seeker in banking tech, remember: it’s a heck of a time to be in the game. The banks are hiring, they’re training, and they’re looking for culture that feels like a tech‑savvy playground.
