Redundancy Radar: Which UK Regions Are in Danger?
The latest stats from Wealth of Geeks show that the Redundancy Notification forms (HR1) were practically flying out of offices across the UK from January to October 2023. Using the Office for National Statistics data, the study converted raw forms into a per‑100,000‑people index, giving us a clear picture of where the job‑cutting thunderheads are swirling.
Top‑Tier Risk Zones
- London – 52,173 HR1 forms, ≈ 593 per 100k.
February 2023 freaked out the rest: 12,706 forms, a full 143.53 % bump over the average. - Yorkshire & the Humber – 25,227 forms, ≈ 460 per 100k.
January 2023 led the pack: 5,402 forms, 114.13 % above the yearly norm. - East Midlands – 16,718 forms, ≈ 343 per 100k.
June 2023 was the hottest month: 3,207 forms, 72.64 % more than average. - East of England – 20,381 forms, ≈ 321 per 100k.
February 2023 again stole the show: 4,439 forms, 117.80 % over the regional average. - West Midlands – 17,891 forms, ≈ 300 per 100k.
February 2023 was the worst time: 2,315 forms, 29.39 % above average. - Scotland – 15,957 forms, ≈ 291 per 100k.
March 2023 topped the list: 3,795 forms, a whopping 137.82 % spike.
Michael Dinich of Wealth of Geeks sums it up: “Around 1.4 million people were unemployed in 2023. Redundancy is a big piece of the puzzle, especially as the cost‑of‑living crunch keeps employers trimming expenses.” He added, “Our study shows London tops the chart for 2024, with Yorkshire & the Humber close behind. February turns out to be the most brutal month in several regions — would it stay the same next year? We’ll have to wait and see.”
