Rising Energy Bills Threaten to Challenge Too Many Households

Energy Bills Get a Bit Bigger in 2025

On Friday, Ofgem announced that household energy costs will climb once more from January 1, 2025. The price cap will rise by 1.2 %, nudging a typical dual‑fuel bill up from £1,717 to £1,738. That follows a 10 % jump a few months ago.

What the Regulators Are Saying

Tim Jarvis, Ofgem’s director general of markets, pointed out:

  • “The cap is staying fairly steady, but energy remains a nightmare for many households.”
  • “More tariffs are hitting the market. Shop around—you might snag something cheaper.”
  • “We’re tangled in global markets, with Russia and the Middle East shaking things up, so prices will keep doing the dance.”
  • “The real solution is a local, renewable system that cuts costs and steadies the ride.”
  • “If your bill feels too steep, talk to your supplier. Make sure you’re on the best deal.”

Voices From the Crowd

Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK, warned that the slight rise will sting the most vulnerable:

“Older folks who missed out on winter fuel payments are already hoping for relief. This cap bump is another hard pill for pensioners on modest incomes—especially those who don’t receive Pension Credit or aren’t able to claim it. Millions of seniors feel the pressure as winter hits. Every penny matters. The State Pension slippage in April won’t help until later.”

Adam Scorer, chief executive of National Energy Action, echoed the concern:

“A 1.2 % rise hurts millions of vulnerable households. Bills are roughly 50 % above pre‑crisis levels, cold weather cuts support, and debt’s mounting. The future looks bleak with no break until January or beyond. Targeted government help is vital. We must stop people from freezing in their own homes.”

Take Action

  • Check your supplier’s rates—switch if you find a better deal.
  • Ask for payment plans or hardship support if you’re struggling.
  • Support local renewable initiatives—every bit adds up.
