Thousands of Centrica Employees Prepare for Pay Reductions

Centrica’s New Pay Plan: Workers Brace for the Pay Slide

What’s Happening?

Energy giant Centrica is looking to trim wages and perks for thousands of employees after last month’s announcement of 5,000 layoffs. GMB, the union representing many of those workers, says the company’s new agenda is a “pay cut” that would hit staff right where it hurts.

Union’s Take‑away

National officer Justin Bowden rapped that while Centrica’s top brass applauded the losses, the real stars—members who kept the lights on during the pandemic—are being told to tighten their belts. He added:

  • “Workers stayed on the job and served meals to the elderly and the vulnerable when the rest of the world was stressed.”
  • “But Centrica now seems ready to slash the earnings of those same loyal employees.”
  • “We’re not sure if the new leadership truly believes cutting wages will solve the crisis, or if they’ve got a bold growth plan that involves fair talks.”

Broader Energy‑Sector Pressure

Prospect, another union with a heftier touch, warns that the financial squeeze is a real shock, especially after Ofgem’s price cap puts the bakery at risk. Deputy general secretary Sue Ferns said:

  • “Retail energy firms are drowning. Grossly unfair, but here we are.”
  • “Centrica issued redundancy notices ahead of negotiations—meaning shareholders can demand lower pay for anyone who disagrees.”
  • “We’re pushing for the best conditions for every staff member and the business itself.”
  • “With Covid‑19 still weighing heavy, we’ve written to Ofgem to ask for a price‑cap tweak that will ease short‑term pressure.”

What’s Next?

With jobs on the chopping block, it’s unclear if Centrica’s new mindset will truly shore up the firm or just shift the burden from the company to its people. Union leaders keep their fingers crossed that negotiations will enforce a fair deal for everyone. Time tells, but the streets are already murmuring—because fair pay should never be an afterthought.
