Tech SMEs in London Continue to Shine
According to the brand‑new Tech SME Landscape report from the City of London Corporation, little‑and‑mid‑size tech firms are still the heart and soul of the Square Mile, having drawn an astonishing £7.2 billion of private capital since 2019.
What the Report Shows
London’s tech scene is a mixed‑bag of brilliant ventures: fintech champs, data dynamos, and AI artisans all riding the same high‑speed wave of growth. These businesses thrive thanks to the city’s ever‑vibrant ecosystem, unbeatable market access, and a seemingly endless network of support.
Feb 2024 – A Record‑Breaking Quarter
- Fintech smashed a record, pulling in £810 million – more than double last year’s haul of £354 million.
- Data & AI raised £383 million this quarter, heading straight toward eclipsing the £514 million raised in 2022.
London boasts more than a third of all UK tech SMEs and 75 % of the country’s unicorns (private firms valued at over $1 billion, or £780 million). It’s a hard‑to‑beat combination of talent, market reach, and funding opportunities that keeps high‑growth companies flocking to the Square Mile.
The City’s Big Play: The SME Strategy
Last year the Corporation rolled out its first comprehensive Small & Medium Enterprise Strategy – a master plan designed to keep the City as the top UK destination for businesses that are starting, scaling, and shaking things up.
- Make support services easier to find and use.
- Unlock the City’s fantastic networks and early‑growth offers for under‑represented founders.
- Align SME growth with the City’s overarching economic goals, reinforcing the “Destination City” vision.
- Clean up a fragmented support landscape and champion inclusivity across a diverse array of founders and teams.
Next Steps: The SME Gateway
The City is about to soft‑launch the SME Gateway, an online portal set to become the go‑to source for SMEs looking to set up in the City and tap into the private finance they need.
Mark your calendars: on 20 February, the Corporation will kick off the Gateway with an event titled “Access to Finance for SMEs: Empowering Growth through Funding and Innovation.” Partners in this initiative include the British Business Bank, Company of Entrepreneurs, and the Federation of Small Businesses.
Words from the Top
Chris Hayward, Policy Chairman says, “London’s tech sector is a magnet for start‑ups and scale‑ups alike, thanks to unbeatable networking, talent pipelines, and funding. We’re first in Europe and fourth worldwide for venture capital investment, but we don’t want to sit on our laurels. The SME Strategy is all about stirring up that growth further.”
So, whether you’re a budding founder or a buzzing investor, keep your eyes on the City of London – it’s still the best place to turn tech dreams into reality.
