Wetherspoons Take the Pub World by Storm! 10‑Week Sales Surge 5.8%

Right after the UK summer weekend, the beloved pub chain JD Wetherspoon delivered a big headline: over the last ten weeks up to 7 July, like‑for‑like sales jumped 5.8%. And on top of that year’s figures have swelled by 7.7%. That’s a serious pint of growth.

Fewer Sites, Bigger Numbers

  • Wetherspoons now have fewer pubs than last year – a fact that’s usually a red flag.
  • Despite the reduction, total sales hit record levels.

Sir Tim Martin’s Take‑away

“The average Wetherspoon pub now churns out roughly £7 million in taxes over the past decade, plus a splash of jobs and community goodwill,” said Sir Tim, the chain’s chairman.

He pointed out that the government’s old tax policy failed to bring pubs and supermarkets onto a level playing field. “That mismatch led to closures and disinvestment,” he warned.

Calling for a Smart Tax Fix

Sir Tim appealed to the current Chancellor – a former Bank of England guru – to “understand how many beans make five” and untangle the tax inequality that’s been holding pubs hostage. A fairer system, he argued, would keep pubs thriving and keep the local community happy.
