Britain’s Hospitality Scene Pops Back in May 2024
Despite a soggy Earth dayballoon of wet and cool weather, the country’s top hotels, pubs and restaurants turned the bank‑holiday palate and bounced straight back into the growth zone. In May, the CGA RSM Hospitality Business Tracker shows a 3.6% year‑on‑year jump in sales – a nice lift over the 1.7% dip that followed six months of solid gains.
Why This Count‐Down Works
- A 4.4% rise in pubs – the rain shouldn’t dampen the spirit of a good pint, it seems.
- Restaurants trended up too, delivering a solid 3.8% increase.
- Bars, however, slipped by 2.7% – a positive change from April but still below target.
- The “on‑the‑go” sector saw a minor 1.6% drop; there’s still room for a splash of improvement.
London Leads the Pack
For the fifth time in six months, hospitality groups in London out‑performed the rest of the UK. Inside the M25, sales grew by 4.1%, while outlets beyond that ring were up 3.5%.
Hot Takes From the Industry
Karl Chessell – CGA by NIQ
“May rescued us from April’s little stumble, getting us back above the inflation bar,” Karl says. “The rain keeps the pubs on their toes, but people are starting to loosen up, especially on weekends that feel like a mini‑vacation. Bars and on‑the‑go spots still haven’t caught up to their sweet spot, and a sunny summer could finally pull folks out of their blankets.”
Saxon Moseley – RSM UK
“Growth returns are welcome, but the minimum‑wage increase means costs are up for everyone,” Saxon notes. “Rainy days and slow rate cuts weigh on confidence; the next govt has a tidy list of upgrades to offer: lower rates, reduced VAT, and a better talent pipeline.”
