London’s Schools Get a Green Boost: Summer of Solar, Paint, and Budget Savings

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has just rolled out the first batch of schools to jump into his brand‑new Greener Schools pilot. The aim? Cut their energy bills by the skin of their teeth, so they can spend more on books, tech, and actually teaching.

What the Plan Looks Like

In all, 38 schools spanning 16 boroughs will save almost £15,000 on average worldwide. That gets you a decent dent in the budget and a real dent in carbon emissions.

The city had opened the floodgates for applications in December 2024, offering a generous £2.9 million grant. But the response was so strong that an extra £9.6 million was pulled in from local councils, giving each school an average injection of over £77,000.

  • 5 special schools
5 spots dedicated to unique needs
  • 2 nurseries – because even the youngest need a greener future
  • 2 secondary schools – the long‑term game plan starts early
  • 31 primary schools – the bulk of the rollout

When the demand hit the roof, an additional £1 million was earmarked for 13 more schools, so the effort kept growing.

What the Money Will Do

In addition to the pure energy fixes (think insulation, LED lights, solar panels, and heat pumps), the grant will sprout climate activism at every school. A scattered effort of whole‑school projects will put savings in water use, run out informational campaigns, and help kids become the next generation of climate champions.

Why It Matters

London is hoping that a citywide adoption of energy‑saving measures could slash over £50 million a year from the education budget. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg – the pilot could be expanded nationwide, giving every child a cleaner, cheaper classroom environment.

And if that’s not enough, the Mayor’s initiative dovetails neatly with the Great British Energy program that just announced 200 schools and 200 hospitals will get rooftop solar panels. All these projects will help schools keep the lights on (with a smile) without draining the coffers.

Words from the Frontline

Sadiq Khan: “I’m thrilled to see the first schools in the capital embracing the Greener Schools initiative. This investment will let schools cut energy costs, freeing up funds for vital resources like books and tech, while also slashing carbon emissions. With a further £9.6 million, we’re close to meeting our net‑zero target by 2030.”

Mete Coban (Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy): “It’s fantastic to see such enthusiastic uptake from boroughs and schools. The collaborative approach has unlocked additional funding, so more pupils will benefit from this. Imagine pockets of change that ripple throughout the city!”

Helen Bruckdorfer (Executive Headteacher, Brecknock & Torriano Federation): “We’re over the moon to get grant funding from the Greener Schools Pilot. It’s a vital step to meet our Climate Action Plan, helping us roll out solar PV and LED lighting. The partnership between Camden Council and our schools underscores a commitment to a greener future.”

Rachel Carli (Headteacher, Durants School): “As an Eco School, we’re committed to protecting our planet. The funding will help advance goals set out in the Enfield Schools Climate Action Plan.”
