Britvic Gears Up to Slash Carbon Footprint
Britvic, coffee‑soda king of the UK, is revamping its London plant with a hefty £8 million spend to boost efficiency and cut emissions. The initiative is a joint venture with the Government’s £4.4 million grant from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
Heat Recovery – Turning Waste into Green Energy
- Installation of a brand‑new heat‑recovery system at the Beckton site.
- Re‑uses waste heat from existing machinery, upscales it, and circulates it across the plant via a low‑temperature hot water network.
- Replaces the carbon‑heavy steam system, shifting 50 % of the heat demand away from fossil fuels.
- Projected to slash emissions by roughly 1,200 tonnes a year – the same amount of energy used by about 500 UK homes.
Inside the Beckton Buzz
Nigel Paine, Britvic’s Supply Chain Director, bursts with excitement: “Every minute, we churn out 2,000 drinks right here – from Robinsons to Tango to Pepsi MAX. We’re always hunting ways to craft these flavours more cleanly. Thanks to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, we’re not just saving money; we’re also saving the planet. Cheers to that!”
Sustaining the Planet – A Call from Sarah Webster
Director of Sustainable Business Sarah Webster shares a heartfelt view: “This investment marks a giant leap toward our Science‑Based Targets and the Healthier People, Healthier Planet strategy. Partnering with the Department has been pivotal; it shows that collaboration is the real magic behind lasting change.”
Why It Matters
Btw, Britvic already knocked out a 34 % reduction in direct carbon emissions since 2017. The new heat recovery is a crucial next step on the path to cutting emissions by 50 % by 2025 and achieving net‑zero by 2050, goals that are backed by the Science Based Target initiative.
When to Expect the Green Shift?
The project is slated to kick off at the end of 2023. The rollout promises to make Britvic’s iconic factory a lot greener, while continuing to pour Canadians’ favourite fizzy drinks into every glass.
