Core US Inflation Gently Rises in August

Did the Core Inflation Heat Up?

In August, the core U.S. inflation – yep, the part that skips the pricey food and energy stuff – jumped to 0.3%. That’s a teensy bump over the 0.2% folks were hoping for.

What the Numbers Actually Say

  • Consumer Price Index (CPI) for all goods: 0.2% (same as July)
  • Total annual inflation: 2.5% (slipped from 2.9% in July)
  • Core annual inflation: steady at 3.2%

Expert Take

Isaac Stell, Investment Manager at Wealth Club, says:

“If core inflation feels a bit warmer than expected, the overall picture still looks cooler. That’s enough to keep the Federal Reserve in mind about easing up on rates. The big question is: a 25‑cent or a 50‑cent drop?

He adds that the Fed will likely play it safe—better to take all the brakes off in a slow, steady rhythm than to rush and set off a price rollercoaster again. In the long fight against inflation, the tortoise usually wins. Without a major economic crisis, the Fed has little reason to choose the risky path.
