Ellwood warns the UK is being ‘attacked daily from Russia’ and we are in a pre-war era

What’s Going On? Tobias Ellwood Says the World Feels Like 1938

In a talk on GB News, former Chairman of the Defence Select Committee Tobias Ellwood painted a pretty vivid picture of the geopolitical climate. He compared today’s tensions to the uneasy calm that preceded the outbreak of World War II.

“We’re Under Attack Every Day”

Ellwood didn’t mince words: “We’re attacked daily by Russia, let me make that clear.” He warned that these assaults are not random acts of aggression, but carefully orchestrated moves designed to: cause economic damage and sow political confusion. According to the MP, it’s all part of Vladimir Putin’s master plan against the UK.

The 1938 Feeling: A Glimpse of a Pre‑War Era

  • Ellwood believes Europe is heading into “a new era of insecurity.”
  • He notes that the United States is still part of NATO, providing a safety net.
  • Russia’s approach is described as probing: looking for weak spots and deploying “green men” – covert operatives in plain clothes – to meddle and sow discord.

Why 1938?

In 1938, Europe was a tinderbox, and tensions were rising. Today, if you’re suspicious of global politics, it’s easy to feel that the world is in a similar pre‑war period. The former chairman’s words underline the urgency: “There’s a 1938 feel to the world right now, and Russia is testing our resilience.”

In Short…

Ellwood is sounding the alarm: Russia threatens economic stability, political unity, and national security. The message is clear – we’re watching a slow‑moving yet escalating drama. Watch the headlines, think critically, and remember: in world affairs, the past often echoes the present.

He said there various things that Russia can do to the UK, “If your power goes out, which it could easily do in London, or, let’s say there’s a swarm drone attack up the Thames that would take out our ability to have water for a number of days.”
Speaking about the fire at the electrical substation which disrupted Heathrow Airport, he warned this clearly demonstrates how vulnerable the UK’s infrastructure is.
He warned, “Imagine that happening on a wider scale, meaning that there’s no electricity in swathes of the South West or South East or Scotland or anywhere for days on end.”
Regarding Britain’s national security and the threats that Russia does pose to the UK it is worth “asking those difficult questions now, can’t be a bad thing.”
The European Union are strongly urging all members to prepare for three days of survival kits as there are growing concerns that global war could breakout.
The European Union crisis management commissioner Hadja Lahbib said this is part of a wider “preparedness strategy.”
EU leaders have constantly warned they fear Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine could lead to a global war.
Commissioner Lahbib told AFP, “Knowing what to do in case of danger, gaming out different scenarios, that’s also a way to prevent people from panicking.”
She added, “All of this comes in addition to national strategies.”
