Ofgem says suppliers need to tighten the safety net for low‑income customers
During a recent market review, the UK energy regulator Ofgem pointed out that several suppliers are not doing enough to help customers who are struggling to keep up with their bills.
Which suppliers are under the microscope?
- TruEnergy – flagged for “severe weaknesses” in customer support.
- Utilita – already hit with provisional orders demanding urgent improvements.
- ScottishPower – same as Utilita, required to step up.
- E, Good, Green Energy, Outfox and Bulb – they have minor issues that still need fixing.
- British Gas – the only supplier that came out clean with no significant problems.
Ofgem’s Chief Executive Buckles Down
Jonathan Brearley told the press, “We’ve found that many suppliers are falling short when it comes to helping vulnerable customers during this winter.”
He added, “The market is under pressure, but the needs of those who can’t keep their bills up must be a top priority.”
Tough Winter Ahead – What It Means for Customers
Briarley warned, “The coming winter will test everyone, especially people struggling to pay their energy bills. The government’s support package is a start, but companies need to put vulnerable customers first.”
Citizens Advice Calls Out the Failures
Dame Clare Moriarty didn’t hold back: “It’s absolutely unacceptable that some suppliers are dropping the ball when people are already stretched thin by cost‑of‑living pressures.”
She urged that Ofgem hold suppliers accountable and that energy firms shun “backdoor disconnection” tactics, which basically mean pushing debtors onto pre‑payment meters.
What’s Next?
Ofgem will keep working with power houses to improve how they support vulnerable customers, while the government watches closely to ensure the changes stick.
