Retail’s Alleyway Blues: The High Street’s Fifth Month of Faltering Footfall
What the Numbers Are Telling
BDO’s High Street Sales Tracker shows that in-store sales dipped -1.7% in April – the fifth straight slide into negative territory. Even though the overall picture (online + in‑store) held steady at +0.4%, the on‑floor slump was the real culprit pulling the whole graph down.
Fashion’s Flat‑Out Fall
- In‑store clothes sales down a staggering -8.3% compared with April 2023.
- Eight straight months of negative in‑store numbers – that’s a whole season of style fatigue.
Homewares Hit a Low
- In‑store home goods fell -1.5%.
- Online sales bounced +8.2%, helping the category finish the month at +1.8% year‑on‑year.
Lifestyle’s Light‑Burst Brilliance
- Only sector to rock a positive combo in April.
- In‑store gains of +3.4% and non‑store +5.8% brought the overall total to +1.8%.
Expert Insight from Sophie Michael
“Another disheartening set of numbers for retail. Online sales are a bright spot, but the high street is still gathering dust,” says BDO’s Head of Retail and Wholesale.
“The fashion crowd will certainly feel the crunch heading into summer – unpredictable, chilly weather likely put a damper on the usual spring‑summer wardrobe spree.”
Sophie warns, “Competition for consumer dollars has never been fiercer. We’ve seen seven straight months of negative or less than 1% growth for discretionary spend. Retailers need to prepare for a reality that’s more than a brief hiccup.”
She adds a cautionary note: “If sales keep sliding, we might see further consolidation, empty storefronts, and a risk to a vital part of the UK economy.”
