London Drivers Are Getting Madder About ULEZ
According to What Car?, a new survey shows that more than 40 % of London motorists now hate the Ultra‑Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) more than before its last‑summer expansion. In fact:
- 41 % of drivers say they’re stronger critics of ULEZ.
- 16 % have become more supportive of the scheme.
- The remaining 43 % are unchanged.
Vandalism Is on the Rise
One in four Londoners feel so unhappy that they actually back the vandalism of ULEZ cameras. If the fact comes out, it might explain why some people are willing to take a price hike by going off the grid…
Pay‑Or‑Bail?
A 22 % slice of drivers either sold their car or plan to sell it to avoid the daily £12.50 charge for non‑compliant vehicles. It’s the new “pump it or ditch it” strategy.
Beyond London
Other cities with low‑emission zones share the resentment. More than half of those surveyed dislike their local schemes, while 41 % still support them.
What About Towns Without ULEZ?
When asked about a “London‑style” zone in their own city:
- 36 % would oppose it.
- 25 % would support it.
What the Critics Say
What Car? editor Steve Huntingford summed it up: “Attitudes have shifted negatively, especially with the high sympathy for camera vandalism. Many people are literally being priced out of the road. More financial help is needed for those forced to replace their non‑compliant cars.”
Whether the anger will simmer or explode remains to be seen. One thing’s for sure—drivers are finding it hard to keep their wheels rolling under the new regime.
