SpaceX Opens the Moon to a Japanese Tycoon
In a headline‑grabbing deal, Yusaku Maezawa – the brilliant genius behind Japan’s biggest online fashion powerhouse, Zozotown – has been announced as the first private passenger to circle the Moon. It’s also the first time anyone has headed to the lunar surface since the last Apollo trek back in 1972.
The Big Announcement
While hanging out with @yousuck2020, SpaceX’s CEO, Elon Musk, casually dropped the bomb: Maezawa is going to the Moon, and he’s bringing a crew of artists along for the ride.
“Finally, I can tell you that I chose to go to the Moon! I want to go with artists!” Maezawa gushed, in a mix of excitement and dry humor, after being introduced by Musk at SpaceX’s California headquarters.
Why Artists?
As a passionate art collector, Maezawa’s mission is no ordinary space trip. He plans to invite six to eight artists—spanning painters, musicians, designers, and more—to experience the Moon’s zero‑gravity wonder. The goal? Every artist will return to Earth and create a masterpiece that will light the fire of inspiration in each of us.
- “What if Picasso had seen the Moon?” – Maezawa muses.
- “What if Andy Warhol or Michael Jackson took the plunge?” – absurd yet captivating.
- “Could Coco Chanel paint a runway in lunar dust?” – yes, you read that correctly.
He says it will be “a once‑in‑a‑lifetime chance to merge the wonder of space with the creative spirit of art.” Imagine Snoop‑dog illustration in microgravity—that’s the kind of edge he brings to the table.
For All the Dreamers
“These masterpieces will spark a dreamer within every single person,” Maezawa added, his eyes lighting up like a comet. Echoing his own ambition, he was quoted as saying, “What if… … everyone can dream large enough to keep the Moon in our imagination?”
And on the official #dearMoon launch day, he shared the familiar quote, “I choose to go to the Moon with artists,” sending a stream of smiles across social feeds.
