Why Nature’s Gift Should Be Shared, Not Stacked
Think of a natural resource like a great, free buffet that everyone gets to grab from.
The problem? Only a handful of folks try to hoard the spoons, end up with a plate full of gold, and leave the rest with crumbs.
What’s really at stake?
- Environment damage: Over‑exploiting land, water, minerals, and even the air we breathe.
- Wealth gap: Riches flow from the poor and their own did‑all‑the‑work lives to a tiny privileged clique.
- Economic strain: Rising costs of rent, mortgages, and everyday essentials because the system is mis‑wired.
In short, mis‑management of what nature freely gives away is the hidden driver behind climate crisis and the cost‑liest bills on our tables.
The Labour Land Campaign’s Crazy (but cool) Plan
They’re shouting for a tax overhaul that looks at:
- Re‑directing tax money from private owners to the public purse.
- Reducing the tax bite on earned income, trade and enterprise (making everyday goods cheaper for the rest of us).
- Taxing unearned income from owning nature’s gifts—so no extra misery on the lives of 99% of people.
Remember, land accounts for almost 60% of the UK’s net worth. If we start with that, we’re staring at the most obvious, easiest drop‑in‑the‑bucket we could tackle.
Words From Heather Wetzel, Vice‑Chair of the LLC
“We’re slashing the wrong places.”
She warns that if governments pulled the tax band from the forces that hurt the economy instead of grafting more on those who simply own nature’s gifts, society would get a much smoother ride. “In a time when the collages of environment collapse and economic strain feel like a bad sequel of a horror movie, it’s about redefining ownership and shifting those unearned profits from the privileged few to the many.”
Wetzel also cynically quips: “When governments water down their recent environmental pledges while continuing to support rentier classes, especially landowners, we see a classic case of a policy that never changes. Taxing natural resource wealth hits all the points: revenue, behaviour nudging, and encouraging a more fair and balanced profit distribution.”
