New Car Sales Hit a Low Amidst Market Shifts

Electric Cars Are Taking Over the Market (August 2024)

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) just rolled out its latest stats, and the buzz is nothing short of electric excitement.

  • New car registrations dipped a touch last month, down to 84,575 from 85,657 in August a year ago.
  • But the good news? Electric‑vehicle (EV) sales surged 10.8 % year‑on‑year.

Mike Hawes, the SMMT chief executive, said the jump is thanks to “heavy discounting by manufacturers over the summer and a raft of new models attracting buyers.” He added that August is a low‑volume month, so the numbers can swing wildly before the big September plate change.

Why 2024’s EV Growth Is Already a Click‑Bait

“The new 74 plate coming in September, coupled with a stack of compelling offers and a growing lineup of models, will really boost purchase considerations. We’ll see if the market truly dials up demand when those numbers hit,” Mike Hawes told us.

Even with the numbers looking rosier, Hawes warned that turning a mass market into pure electric buyers is still a massive challenge. “Affordability remains a barrier, and folks are still worried about where and how quick they can charge,” he added.

Auto Trader’s View on the Surge

Ian Plummer, commercial director at Auto Trader, highlighted how UK registrations were “sluggish overall in August” because buyers tend to hold off until September’s plate changes.

“Despite that, the heavy discounting from manufacturers pulled the electric share of new car leads on Auto Trader up to 27 %, the highest market share since the end of 2022.”

Plummer is calling on the government to keep the financial incentives alive for new EV buyers. He also urged cutting VAT on public charging stations to smooth the transition to electric.

Bottom Line: The Electric Hype Is Real

In a nutshell, the whisper of electric car prices dipping, fresh models dropping, and a push from governments means 2024 is shaping up to be a turning point. Car buyers who once thought electric was a niche are finding the numbers and perks add up to a “buy now, enjoy later” package.
