One-Third of People Over 40 Face Rising Financial Anxiety This Holiday Season

Christmas‑Crisis: Over‑40s Live on Edge of Their Wrinkles

Turns out a third of UK workers who’ve already pushed back the age of their first birthday alarm are sweating over whether their nest eggs will stretch to cover a festive feast once they boot the office out.

Survey Snapshot (My Pension Expert, 2,000 Adults, 2023)

  • 32% of folks aged 40+ are worried their savings won’t make it through the holiday season.
  • More than 30% say the idea of splurging on Christmas gifts makes them nervous.
  • Nearly a half (46%) feel that high inflation and interest rate hikes are throwing a wrench into their holiday budgets.
  • And 30% plan to tighten their belts this year, spending less than last Christmas.

Why the Festive Angst?

“The year’s been a bumpy ride for pension planners, and the holidays haven’t been much kinder,” Lily Megson, policy director at My Pension Expert, explains. “Inflation and rates are keeping older workers on edge. They’re stuck between honoring tradition and guarding the future.”

Time to Bring in the Trusted Advisors

She adds, “Nothing beats good old independent advice. It can shave off that anxiety, letting people bask in the holiday glow without constantly worrying how their budget stacks up.”

In Short

Autumn’s a heavy hitter this year, but an honest financial plan might just make those Christmas cookies feel ordinary again.
