Money Is the MVP: How Pay Keeps Employees in the Game
Want to know what really keeps your team glued to the office? Spoiler alert: it’s the green stuff in your paycheck, not a fancy coffee machine or a pet rock on your desk. In a fresh study, the salary debate was louder than the office gossip.
1. Cash Beats Perks, Courts, and Creativity
- Salary reigns supreme – 62.3% of UK staff say the size of the paycheck is the deciding factor when picking an employer.
- Job security still matters but trails behind at 48%.
- A fun workplace pulls only a modest 31%.
2. When Money Doesn’t Grow Trumpets
Mid‑career worries: 46% of respondents admit they’d head out if their pay curve stays flat. Long‑term dissatisfaction is the biggest red flag for letting talent wander.
3. The Research Rundown
SD Worx, the HR leader, tapped 5,000 businesses and 18,000 employees across 18 European nations – UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, and more – to uncover what truly matters.
Takeaway? Make the numbers count!
Next time you’re drafting a compensation plan, remember the statistic: people’ll stay if they see a paycheck that supports their future, not a job title that sounds fancy. If you want to keep the crew, give them what they’re about – an attractive salary package that wins the battle of the benefits.
Pay pain points
UK Workers Are Still Unhappy with Their Pay
Surprisingly, the latest study shows that only 47 % of people in the UK are happy with their salary overall. Even folks who feel their wages are competitive in the market are a tiny 49 %.
When it comes to fairness compared to peers, just over half (52 %) think they’re being paid appropriately.
Perks That Don’t Quite Deliver
Companies in the UK are rolling out about eight perks per employee on average—just one more than the European average of seven. Yet, there’s an obvious gap between what workers want and what’s actually offered.
- 46 % want extra vacation days, but only 30 % can actually grab those days.
- Many other benefits remain out of reach or underwhelming.
Transparency and Personalisation: A Real Struggle
Understanding the total value of your pay package can feel like decoding a secret message. Less than half (47 %) are content with how transparent the policies are.
Only 50 % feel communication about salary and perks is adequate.
When it comes to tailoring their perks, a mere 25 % can customize the package to fit their lifestyle—despite 50 % desiring more control.
Experts Weigh In
Laura Miller, the UK People Country Leader at SD Worx, says:
“Money still makes or breaks a company’s ability to attract and keep top talent. With rising living costs, many folks feel a significant strain at the end of their paycheck. Employers have stepped up with flexible working and a wider range of perks, yet the era of truly personalised pay packages is still a work in progress.”
She continues:
“Employees not only value money but also a benefit package that supports them in exactly how, when, and where they need it. Whether it’s study programs, flexible schedules, extra days off, or wellness initiatives, people only truly appreciate the value when those perks help them excel both inside and outside the workplace.”
“It’s absolutely essential for companies to rethink salary plans strategically, ensuring they offer as much personalisation as is practical,” Miller notes.
