UK Staff Should Brace for a Smoother Sliver in Pay Increases This Year, Says CIPD
In short: The average annual pay bump is taking a dip from the solid 5 % it held for more than a year. CIPD predicts a 4 % rise for 2024 – the first decline since the pandemic began.
Private vs Public: The Good, The Bad, and the Stir‑ring
- Private sector – 5 % → 4 % – a modest but noticeable drop.
- Public sector – 5 % → 3 % – a sharper cut that might bump up the “brain drain” itch.
While businesses are feeling optimistic, the actual numbers suggest a cautious walk forward. Empires built on payroll will now have to consider what else they can offer to retain talent.
What Employers Need to Keep the Team Alive
According to Derek Mackenzie, CEO of Investigo:
“Pay is undeniably a key colour in the recruitment palette, but it’s not the whole picture. Culture, career touring, learning avenues and flexible working are the hidden hues that make employees feel seen and essential.”
He adds:
- People crave career ladders that aren’t just top‑billing cards.
- Flexible workplaces are the new hobby that keeps work life balanced.
- Training programs have become the “value‑add” that turns the ordinary into the extraordinary.
In essence, the message is: Showers of extra perks and support can help you stand out when salaries plateau.
Hiring Numbers – A Quiet Pause
The CIPD notes that many firms are easing hiring pressures. While one‑third of employers plan to grow headcount over the next three months, a tiny 10 % are trimming teams.
Less competition for staff is expected to smooth the labor market across the board. More outfits will feel the pull of a thriving talent pool, even if it is slower now.
Digital Poverty: A Growing Chasm
Elizabeth Anderson, CEO of the Digital Poverty Alliance warns of the widening divide:
“Pay growth stagnation means more millions could push digital poverty into the spotlight. A staggering 19 million across the UK already feel cut off from connectivity, devices and digital savvy. If salaries slow, that gap will widen further.”
She stresses that both government and employers must equip staff with the right tools and connectivity, otherwise we’re risking widespread budget cuts and a loss of digital presence.
