Syria’s new interim leader says ‘it is time for this people to enjoy stability and calm’

“Let’s Keep the Calm Going – New Syrian Interim PM Urges Peace

After stepping into the shoes of a caretaker Prime Minister, Mohammed al‑Bashir wants the country to breathe a little easier. He’s looking to shepherd Syria toward a fresh, constitutional government by March 1, 2025, saying now’s the moment for the populace to feel some stability and calm.

From Rebel Stronghold to Cabinet Sessions

Al‑Bashir used to rule a small, rebel‑held corner in northwest Syria during the Assad years. Now he’s pulling people together: “We convened a cabinet meeting and welcomed former government members and key figures from Idlib’s administration,” he told Al Jazeera. “We’re setting up the groundwork for the next two months until we get a proper constitution that can serve all Syrians.”

He added, “Let’s agree on restoring institutions so the people can actually run their lives.” And he chimes in, “Now it’s time for the people to just enjoy some peace and quiet.”

HTS’s First Words to the West

  • Abu Mohammed al‑Jolani, head of Hayat Tahrir al Sham, told Sky News that the “panic” is over now. “We finally knocked the oppressive Assad regime out of the way.”
  • He promised a rebuilt nation – the fear that once plagued people was tied to the regime’s presence. “We’re moving toward development and reconstruction; it’s all about stability.”
  • He added, “Everyone’s tired of war. Syria isn’t ready for another round and won’t go back in.”

Israel’s Warning to HTS

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took a sharp shot at the situation, urging HTS not to emulate the paramilitary‑allied slavery under Assad that allowed the regime to hand over weapons to Iran and Hezbollah. He threatened: “If this regime lets Iran re‑enter Syria, or moves Iranian weapons or supplies to Hezbollah, or even attacks us, we’ll respond hard and pay a heavy price.”

Netanyahu further warned, “Whatever happened to the former regime should happen to this one too.”
