UK Motorhome Driving Rules Unveiled

UK Motorhome Driving Rules Unveiled

You need the right licence to drive a motorhome or campervan, and your vehicle needs to be within UK size limits.

Motorhome Licensing and Import Rules Explained

The licence you need to drive a motorhome depends on two key factors: your age and the vehicle’s maximum authorised mass (MAM). The MAM is the motorhome’s own weight plus the maximum load it can carry safely.

Licensing by MAM

  • C1 Licence – required for motorhomes with a MAM between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes.
  • C Licence – required for motorhomes with a MAM exceeding 7.5 tonnes.

Note: licence requirements may differ in Northern Ireland.

Importing a Motorhome into the UK

To bring a motorhome into the UK permanently, you must register it first. UK regulations set strict limits on motorhome size:

  • Length – no more than 12 metres.
  • Width – no more than 2.55 metres.

These measurements exclude driving mirrors, rear bumpers, lamps, and reflectors.

Quick Recap

  • C1 licence for 3.5‑7.5 tonnes.
  • C licence for over 7.5 tonnes.
  • Register before import.
  • Max 12m length, 2.55m width.

Key Takeaway

There’s no strict height ceiling for motorhomes, but any vehicle exceeding three metres must display a visible height notice for drivers.

What the Driver Must See

  • Notice must be placed where it can be easily seen by the driver.
  • Height must be measured in metres.
  • For motorhomes taller than three metres, not having a notice could lead to violation.
