Christmas Dinner Showdown: Waitrose vs. Iceland – The Cheapest Deal at £24.86!

Christmas Dinner Price Wars: Who’s the Wallet‑Friendly Savior?

The holiday shopping rush is already in full swing, and thousands of shoppers are racing to supermarkets to hunt the best bargains for their festive feasts. A new study from the investment platform Saxo has laid out the exact costs you’ll face with UK’s top grocery chains, from budget to boutique.

Top Finds (Cheapest to Costliest)

  • Aldi – The champion of frugality: roast with all the trimmings for just £24.62. Although Asda is a close second at £24.86, Aldi still holds the crown.
  • Waitrose – Surprisingly affordable for an elite store, the turkey full of extra goodies comes at £40.32, beating both Iceland (£46.70) and Sainsbury’s (£42.67).
  • Ocado – The most expensive option in the lineup, with a dinner package that can skyrocket close to £80—a shocking difference of around £55 more than the Aldi score.

What’s Fueling the Numbers?

According to Ole Hansen at Saxo, the worldwide food scene is juggling several price shifts. Food price inflation sits at a modest 2% year‑on‑year, bolstered by falling sugar (-22%) and cereal (-9%) costs. However, meat, vegetable oils, and dairy have all jumped, with increases of +6%, +19%, and +19% respectively.

Additional pressures from unpredictable weather mean higher prices for cocoa, coffee, and orange juice. In September, the pound briefly tightened but couldn’t hold long enough to make a lasting dent in import costs.

Energy and labour are still the heavy hitters in producing food. While wages have cooled from previous spikes, diesel has seen a notable drop due to lower feedstock prices—down roughly 25% this year.
