Virgin Media Faces a London Broadband Outage
What’s the story?
Just after 9 am on Thursday, a wave of complaints hit Down Detector as folks across London discovered their Virgin Media internet had gone dead. The company’s spokesperson quickly stepped in, offering a sincere apology and promising a speedy fix.
Why is this happening?
With the pandemic still in full swing, everyone’s hustling to work and learn from home. That means data usage skyrockets—last month alone, Virgin Media reported households using an extra 325 GB of data since the March lockdown began. In fact, April was the company’s busiest month on record, and May isn’t far behind.
Here’s a snapshot of the numbers:
- London: 20 % surge in downloads
- Wales: 10 % rise
- Scotland: the quietest, the least data hustle
- Northern Ireland: a whopping 58 % jump
What’s the fallout?
Families in lockdown are now at home watching more shows and eating more streaming snacks, which can hit their data caps hard. Children are tucking into remote classes, pulling down an extra 3.4 GB each day. Meanwhile, the weekend of March 23‑29 saw a triple‑fold increase in data consumption, pushing usage higher by 32.5 GB.
How Virgin Media is handling it
Our Chief Technology Officer, Jeanie York said the network has proven itself “reliable and resilient,” keeping people in touch with work, friends, and family. “We’re seeing a new dawn for broadband usage,” she added, hinting that COVID‑19 will leave a lasting imprint on how we’ll consume data.
Tech expert Ernest Doku noted that under lockdown “connectivity problems are a real pain for thousands of customers.” He added a friendly reminder: if your home connection dies, you can tether your phone’s data to keep surfing—just beware it burns through the allowance faster than usual.
Fingers crossed for a quick restore
Virgin Media has released a statement that they’re “urgently working” to bring back services to London’s households. Customers are being asked to bear with the hiccup as the team rolls out fixes.
Stay tuned for updates, and thanks for your patience during this downtime!
